# Budget and expenses

> What your trip will cost, logging what you spend, splitting with friends, and keeping track of card payments and refunds.

## What the trip will cost

The trip's **Budget** screen shows the cost by category against your budget, as a likely range. It includes:

* prices for rooms and fares you haven't booked yet, estimated when you open it on Pro and Elite
* destination fees, such as Dubai's Tourism Dirham
* your on-trip daily allowance, group shares and who owes whom

From the Budget screen you can book, watch fares, and **fit the trip to your budget**. Mazer suggests real-price swaps, the same thing for less, up to one step down in quality, and applies them only when you approve.

Mazer quotes the same figures the Budget screen shows, rather than adding them up itself.

## Logging spend

On WhatsApp and Telegram, type what you spent or send a receipt photo. Mazer logs it to the active trip and replies with today's balance.

Expenses in any currency are converted to your home currency for the totals.

## Spend pace

Once a trip of three days or more is under way and has a budget and at least three logged expenses, Mazer projects your spending to the last day. If you're heading more than about 20% over budget, it warns you while there's still time, with a daily amount that would get you back on track. It also tells you if you're well under budget. Each alert fires once, and the settings are in **Settings → Notifications**.

## Splitting

Mazer runs the maths as a small program, so totals and splits are calculated, not guessed. You can also connect **Splitwise** in **Settings → Integrations** (Pro and Elite).

## Trip money

For trips abroad, the Trip Home has three money tools:

* **Money plan**: the exchange rate, which of your saved cards adds the least in fees, and UPI where it works.
* **Card payments**: paste a bank SMS or email and it becomes an expense once you tick it. Turn on **Find trip spends and refunds in Gmail** and Mazer reads your bank's own alerts too. With **Add trip spends automatically** on, spends in the trip's country are added straight away, and you can undo them in Budget.
* **Refunds and claims**: track money you're owed, ticked off when the refund lands. **Chase** asks Mazer to draft a follow-up.

Which of my cards should I use in \[Japan] to pay the least in fees?

## Files and charts

Make me an Excel file of every expense on my \[Goa] trip, by category, with a chart of spending per day.
